Research

Dr. Linda Xu (publishes academically as Wei Xu). Three themes run through my papers.

Supply chains under uncertainty

How should a manufacturer set capacity, order raw materials and plan production when lead times and quantities are uncertain? With Dongping Song (University of Liverpool) and Michael Roe (University of Plymouth) I built mathematical models of these supply chains, tested strategies in simulation, and tuned them with optimisation algorithms (genetic algorithms and stochastic approximation) on real manufacturing cases. It was machine intelligence before language models: a computer searching for better decisions than people could find by hand.

I explain the reasoning in how I think about machines making decisions. My PhD thesis, supervised by Dongping Song, Michael Roe and Sarah Tuck, is in the University of Plymouth repository (DOI 10.24382/1546).

Technology management and entrepreneurship

With Dr. Linton, on how new science reaches the market.

Emerging technology

Work on emerging technologies such as 3D printing is in progress and will be listed here once published.
